The warm, dark and sweaty environment of a yoga class can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Though an antibacterial treatment is mixed into the top layer of Lululemon’s signature yoga mat, The Mat, a buildup of sweat and dirt can still result in sanitation issues and cause germs to come in contact with your skin, mouth and nasal passages. Cleaning your mat after each use with a natural cleanser, such as water mixed with lemon juice, can help to reduce bacteria buildup.
Things You'll Need
- Towels
- Spray bottle
- Water
- Lemon juice
- Bathtub or large basin
Step 1
Fill a spray bottle with 3 parts water and 1 part lemon juice. Shake the bottle well to mix the liquids.
Step 2
Lay your Lululemon yoga mat flat on the floor on top of clean towels. Spray the entire surface of the mat with the lemon-water mixture.
Step 3
Rub the surface of the mat with a clean, damp towel. Make sure all of the soiled areas are scrubbed with the towel.
Step 4
Wipe the surface with a clean, dry towel. Flip the mat over and repeat the cleaning process on the second side. Cleaning both the top and bottom layer of the mat ensures that it will stay clean when the two sides touch, such as while it is rolled up.
Step 5
Hang the mat over a clothesline or shower door to dry. Allow the mat to fully dry before using.
